MONTGOMERY — Andalusia danced into town last night.

The Bulldogs had good reason to celebrate as they picked up their first win of the season in a 33-15 victory over Trinity Presbyterian at Boykin Field.

After a meager first-half start, AHS picked up its game on both sides of the ball in the final 24, where the Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 27-8.

“It’s big,” AHS head football coach Brian Seymore said about getting the win. “Being down 7-6 at halftime, we had a lot of opportunities in the first half, but we didn’t convert. We had some costly penalties (five).”

Seymore went on to say that the players’ effort was the biggest difference in the second half.

“They came out in the second half and played hard from start to finish,” he said. “That’s what we challenged them to do. Our defensive staff did a great job coming up with a plan against their spread offense”

Each of Andalusia’s fourth-down conversions came on scoring drives.

Sophomore running back Jamal Hourel scored his second touchdown of the night on a fourth-and-goal situation with 7:36 left in the third quarter to give AHS a 12-7 lead after a missed 2-point try.

During the Bulldogs’ next offensive possession, senior quarterback Brayden Burkhardt connected with senior running back DeVante Jackson for the second fourth-down conversion. Two plays later, Burkhardt scooted the ball in from 3 yards with 1:51 left in the third and the Bulldogs took a 19-7 lead.

Big defensive plays on Trinity’s next offensive possession, including a 8-yard sack on quarterback Ben Jones gave the Bulldogs excellent field position with time running out of the third quarter.

To start the fourth, AHS drove 28 yards for another TD, where junior running back Trevor Parker rushed in from 5 yards with 7:30 left. With the extra point try, the Bulldogs led 26-7.

That last scoring drive came at a cost for the Bulldogs as Burkhardt had to be carried off by his teammates because of an injury.

Seymore said he’s hoping and praying that his starting QB isn’t hurt, and added that he didn’t know if it was his ankle or leg.

Burkhardt was immediately taken to the hospital for X-rays. There was no new information on his injury as of press time last night.

AHS junior Taylor Griffin came in for Burkhardt and quickly found the end zone on the Bulldogs’ next offensive possession.

Griffin converted the final fourth-down hurdle before knocking the ball in from 5 yards with 2:23 left in the game. With the PAT kick by Chase Hopkins, who went 3-for-3, Andy led 33-7.

Trinity managed to score again when Jones found junior receiver Robert Adams for a 31-yard TD strike with 44.7 seconds on the clock.

Seymore said his defensive line played well, especially lineman O.T. Green, who replaced Antonio Gurley. Gurley injured his hand late in the first half, and the coach said he might have “fractured” it. He, too, went to the hospital for X-rays.

Hourel scored Andalusia’s first TD with 1:28 left in the first half on a 3-yard rush, but a failed 2-point try put the Bulldogs behind 7-6 at the break.

Parker caught an interception to ice the scoring try with no time left in the first half.

Hourel, who was running for injured senior running back Derrick Dorsey (ankle), finished with 53 yards on 14 carries and two TDs. Burkhardt finished with 79 yards on 19 carries and a score.

Andalusia visits Ashford next week in region action.
